So yesterday was the first time Dahlia's done something somewhat "wrong" while left alone. Please see exhibit A:

Yes...that is a footprint...on one of David's dissertation papers...that was on his desk. Yes, it's reddish. No, it's not blood. Please see exhibit B:

David left the door to the bedroom open and apparently Dahlia, who likely wanted to look out the window, got up onto the table. We were WARNED about it, but David left the door open AND the chair to his desk sitting out in such a way that it was easy for her to get up there. She wandered around the table as there are footprints on a lot of papers. And she knocked some things on the ground (including his laptop! eek! It was ok, luckily). She must have been nervous about getting down and panting as there was a bit of drool on the ground near the chair and table. Whoops! We didn't get mad at her. It wasn't her fault after all! But it made for some pretty funny pictures.

And now for some pictures...a few are quite humourous!

You might notice a quality difference in the next ones. I was testing out my old Kodak EasyShare (2MP!) to send to the rescue we got Dahlia from. It seems to work ok.

(we wanted to get Dahlia used to the crate again...she wouldn't go in it, so David crawled in and she then went in with him. Hehe)

it is so hard to take good pictures of black dogs, especially ones who have shiny healthy coats like dahlia, do you do anything special to get nice ones like these?

I don't really do anything special. The bottom group are actually taken using an old 2MP camera, so the camera quality is pretty bad too (the top two are from David using a fancy DSLR camera).

Mostly I either take them outside or get plenty of light going inside. Proper lighting is really the key. Sometimes I have to edit the photo using photoshop (I didn't with these ones) to bring up the shadows and add a bit more contrast. Dahlia photographs pretty well though. I think modern cameras are much better at taking good shots of black dogs than the old ones are. My pics of my childhood dog were pretty bad!

I agree that good lighting is important. My black Lab has very shiny fur, so taking pictures of her indoors with the flash are tricky. Decreasing the power of the flash or covering it with a hand for a sec really helps. Outside shots generally turn out well.

Definitely if the camera has a lesser flash use that! I use the "baby" mode on mine because the flash is weaker and the pictures come out much better.

Outdoor shots are always the best though.

She looks so noble in the ones where she's sniffing the air!!

She really does -- she has a very noble and dignified looking face. Until she pulls one of those silly smiles in the first couple photos!

Faith is the same way, hehehe. Aristocratic yet goofy. =P
